From Disneyland to Butlins, from sandy beaches to outer space, Claudia Nova's practice explores the aesthetics of escapism through photography, print, sculpture and installation. Her work seeks to arouse feelings of either longing (for what one can never have) or nostalgia (for an ideal that perhaps never existed). Utopian dreamscapes take on an aura of absurdity in their reconstruction as stiff, two-dimensional stage sets, emphasizing the fact that the nearest we can get to 'paradise' is a self-consciously constructed imitation.
Nova believes in the artist's inclination - or obligation - to perform. She draws parallels between the posturing and presentation of the artist and of the popular entertainer, and reflects upon the symbiotic relationship between performer and audience. Her utilization of found imagery from film stills and other sources reflects the practice of living vicariously through the experiences of another, as well as the obsessive collecting and displaying behaviour of the super-fan.
Claudia Nova lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland.
